This week’s holiday Song of the Week, “Puppies Are Forever” by Sia is cloying enough to be catchy. And besides, who can resist a little furball wearing a bow under the tree, excited to be welcomed into his forever home?
Sia is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, an enigmatic Australian singer-songwriter, performer, filmmaker, and artist extraordinaire. After success with the acid-jazz band Crisp in the early to mid-’90s, later fame with the English band Zero 7, and a acclaim as a solo act, Sia grew uncomfortable with her increasing recognition on the streets. In 2010, she began donning wigs and disguises, choosing to turn her back to her audiences or wear a mask when she performed live. Much like another very private female performer, Sade, both cite increased pressures that come with fan recognition and the desire for a personal life as reasons for retreat.
“Puppies Are Forever” is off of Sia’s November 2017 release, Everyday Is Christmas, her eighth studio album and first holiday album. The album was written and co-produced with Sia’s longtime collaborator, Greg Kurstin. Recorded in a mere two weeks in May 2017, both Kurstin and Sia report that the album was a cathartic, hilarious experience, and the songs and whimsy of the album reflect this.
Naturally, the issues of puppies truly being “forever” and “not just for Christmas” has struck the right chord with the folks at animal rights organization, PETA. They make it their mission this time of the year to remind prospective dog owners that cute little puppies grow up to be real (sometimes really big) dogs.
